ileana changed her status to: workin’ from home high on coffee and cold meds with my roomies Amanda and Roxie  but what i really wanted to write was how i remembered this morning my mom’s electric coffee grinder and the crazy sounds it made and how i was always worried that thing was out of control, wild, as in like a wild beast in pseudo-Dada machine way!!! u know!? bzzzz bzzzz bzzzz...

Last night I dreamt I was walking on the side of a highway, pitch dark, cold, i could see my breath, and the metal barrier curving to my side. I could see scattered tall fir trees to my left, a forest I think. There was light from a car behind me, and I wasn’t sure but I felt like the headlights were following me. It was the only thing you could see, two perfect streaks of light searching...

victor & victoria
Oh speaking of Gloria (and victories), I actually had a point:  Rummaging through the archives last week, I found a box of photographs from the Romanian Revolution of 1989. One of the photographs (part of a larger series by Magnum photographer Leonard Freed) shows a (significant) group of mothers breast feeding their newborn babies. The back of the print mentions that a great number of children...

Stieglitz vs. Steichen
Stieglitz to Steichen, after their first meeting in New York, as Steichen was ready to embark on a ship that would take him to Paris: “Not that you are going to Paris to study art, do you feel that, when you have mastered drawing and painting, you will abandon the camera?” “Never,” Steichen answered instantly. “I shall use the camera as long as I live; for it can...

Quote from a good friend and fellow Romanian expat (which is important because of the cultural references to follow): “I feel like Eminem. I’m really good at what I do, but nobody seems to notice.” To generalize. People I’ve met in the past almost 10 years of living abroad tended to include Romanians expatriates in two categories (besides the offensive ones, which are extra...

ou je vais revivre la jeunesse
i really wanted to be an actor, if not a dancer. and that was not just a matter of wanting one of the most (personally) rewarding careers ever. it was due to being part of a theatre group called Amifran. we used to practice every weekend (in high-school yes!), in French (yes!) and we went on tours, on many tours. it was with them that i went on my first travels outside Romania, and where some of...

i was on my flight back from Romania this early October; the sky was very bright and clear. i remember looking out the window and seeing the Alps laid out underneath. barren, not yet with snow, not even patches. just rugged, dark brown and black rock. i watched until they sank into lower relief.
